Our Conductor

Christopher Walker

Christopher Walker has combined a successful teaching career with a busy musical schedule as a violinist, conductor, singer and viola player. He was awarded an LEA scholarship to Chetham's School in Manchester at the age of nine, and was a chorister at the Cathedral there for five years. Whilst a student at The University of Hull he specialised in musical performance, studying conducting with Robert Marchant, and violin with Frederick Applewhite and Louis Carus.

Chris has conducted Benson Choral Society since 1975, and during that time he has taught locally, first at Wallingford School, and from 1978 to 2001 as Director of Music at The Henley College. He has been heavily involved in much local music making as conductor and viola player, including conducting Henley Choral Society for several years. From 2000 – 2006 he was Musical Director of Reading Youth Orchestra..

Chris examines across the UK and abroad for The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, most recently in South Africa.

Our Accompanist

Jeremy Boughton

Jeremy Boughton was educated at Reading Blue Coat School, and Newton Park, Bath where he studied Piano with John Parry, took part in operas and masterclasses, and furthered his interest in choral and church music, singing in Bath Abbey Evening Choir. He now divides his time between teaching and performing.

In addition to a large teaching commitment (mainly piano students), he is repetiteur to the Benson Choral Society and directs The Thames Consort.

After 23 years as director of music at St. Helen's Church Benson, he has recently been appointed director of music at Dorchester Abbey. He is frequently heard as a continuo player and accompanist and is a founder member of the Chamber Choir 'Schola Aquae Sulis' which can be heard each year in the major U.K. cathedrals. He also plays the 'Cello for fun, builds pipe organs and is an occasional fair weather rower.
